Since Gardiner Haskins first became an “all under one roof” home centre in 1972, customers have changed their shopping habits considerably especially in buying beds. A big factor is that more customers are considering the sustainability and eco-credentials of their purchases. One of our manufacturers, who have themselves evolved to become more sustainable, are Harrison Spinks British manufacturer of beds and mattresses as featured on BBC2’s Inside The Factory.
Harrison Spinks manufactures over 90% of the components of their mattresses in house in their Leeds Factory or very close by. They even have their own 300-acre farm to allow them to grow their own hemp and flax. They also keep sheep on the farm to provide wool for the filling. In their factory they draw their own wire and make the springs for the mattresses.
During the process of making the mattress no glue is used. This makes a Harrison Spinks mattress 100% recyclable at the end of its life. They have a vision for a zero to landfill waste culture which also means no foam is used in production. The outer cover of each mattress is also woven in house, which is inherently fire retardant with no chemicals required, better for your health and the environment.
Harrison Spinks have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development twice, first in 2013 and again in 2019 showing their continued efforts in the field. They are also one of the first UK based bed manufacturers to achieve Carbon Neutral+ for every aspect of their process.
Harrison Spinks also has a local connection with the Cotswolds where our Cirencester Store is based. In 2019 Harrison Spinks and local well known TV presenter and farmer Adam Henson, came together with what they describe as “a shared passion for our heritage”. With their partnership, they hope to carry on using traditional craftmanship mixed with new technology to build new sustainable beds. The Adam Henson range contains luxury wool from his rare breeds and is also 100% recyclable like the rest of the Harrison Spinks catalogue. You will be able to spot Adam Henson’s range in store with the Cotswolds’ identifiable names including “Burford” and “Fairford”.
